When to cut your hedges?

When to cut your hedges?

Generally most hedge cutting takes place between September and December and sometimes May to July dependant on the plant in question. Although last year due to the mild weather some did not stop!
It is always of great importance to know what plant you are dealing with. We regularly visit properties where an old, well kept conifer has been killed due to a poor cut. Sadly at this point there is nothing that anyone can do but start again with a new plant!
I have personal experience of cutting something at the wrong time and watching it die back and lose leaves over a four week period (a very sweaty four week period for me!). Fortunately we were able to save it and learn a valuable lesson.
If you would like a nice, well kept hedge you generally need to undertake two cuts per year with a sharp blade to minimise stress to the plant.
All hedge work is dependant on the plant so good advice is a must before proceeding. If you would like any advice on specific plants, please get in touch.
