I find this job extremely satisfying. With either, decorative barks or dark, nutrient rich composts or soils are spread over the bed to put some goodness back in the soil for when everything erupts into life. I find this also works well keeping on top of those unwanted little plants as you can rake over the bed on a semi regular basis to keep on top of them, meaning there are only a few stubborn ones to get by hand.
